After watching Once Upon a Time on ABC I was excited to spot the Snow White character wearing a Club Monaco blouse! I really love that piece. I spent some time in New York this summer and was able to familiarize myself with that brand and their collections. This blouse was part of their July Collection. The first two pictures below are of the top on the sales floor. It is hung in one photo and on the mannequin in other picture.

The other two photos are just examples of Club Monaco's awesome merchandising and displays! I love it. I really love the lifestyle of this brand and their clothing is inspirational to me! I love the flowing feminine garments and soft colors with bright. They tend to use a lot of silk and I liked the way they incorporated a tie dyed silk skirt in one of their summer collections...it was adorable!

Here are some looks from their collections they have currently in store that I am fond of. I love how they incorporate tie dye like print and it is not even summer! :)

Red Tails Muse

After a long break from writing..I'm at it again! I decided to use Red Tails as my muse for styling an inspiration page! :) I included items that are similar to the ones used throughout the film...I thought the the film was well made and action packed! I enjoyed seeing a period movie set in the midst of WWII. It told the story of young men that faced adversity while serving the country and their influence in the war despite the intentions of keeping them on the sidelines. I also noticed the fashion...after watching I was all of a sudden feeling I needed more tan and olive green in my wardrobe :) I also included a few videos that also showcased the movie well.

It may be puzzling at times to figure out what items you could wear in your free time when you have a lot of professional suits, shoes, shirts and dressy outfits. There is an evident need for items that may be worn on the weekends, to the grocery store, or on vacations. The items I am envisioning are not a pair of sweat pants and a t shirt! I am talking about items that are very casual but when worn the person wearing the outfit looks put together, sharp, and comfortable! That is where I come in...On a hot July weekend my sister, her friend, and I went shopping! Similar to the outfit above; I picked out different pieces that may look really well together. The dress has a V neck, empire waist, with a loose fitted torso. It is made of breathable and light weight fabric. When it is well into the 90s this is the kind of dress you would love to wear. The scarf is a contrasting floral fabric from the dress. Combining Tye dye and floral prints with similar color palettes like the navy and lighter blue compliment each other. The wedges are gold metallic and can dress up a casual dress way more than a pair of flip flops. Jute trimmed or cork or both great options. Since the footwear is gold it would be great to tie in that tone through the other accessories. So one of the bracelets that would work well with the wedges have tiny gold beads that have a touch of gold without taking attention away from anything else.

This is probably one of my favorite photos of New York so far. It was taken just a few days ago. It was very hot outside, well into the 90s. I love this picture because it reminds me of an old time New York movie scene where the fire hydrant is just spewing water everywhere. I love seeing the joy these girls have while approaching the water..it is evident without even seeing their faces. Even feeling the mist coming my way on a hot day like that was refreshing.

No matter how much technology advancements we have...it is really the simple things like a fire hydrant busting or running through a sprinkler 50 times that really make summmer, and childhood memories fill our lives with overflowing joy.

Art and Science working together

It is interesting watching The Pixar story documentary because I love learning about history. I also enjoyed learning about the grassroots of 3D animation and the Pixar company. The viewer is able to see the transformation from 2D animation to 3D, where using computers as a new medium of art was a journey. The outcome of that journey was unknown at that time and exciting.

My friend Sadia went skydiving yesterday, and ohh what a feat that is!! I thought these were awesome pictures taken of her by a fellow skydiver. From this view she could see Lake Huron and Canada in the early morning. Free falling from that altitude isn't necessarily my cup of tea. It is one of those experiences that not everyone is willing to try but it is also an experience that I am sure is amazing. Amazing: the feeling of overcoming something, the excitement, the adrenaline, the gorgeous views, and knowing you helped someone in need...

~The purpose of this experience was to raise funds for a non profit organization SOAR( Speak out about Rape) for raped victims and sexually assaulted women. She raised money so that anything they need to start the process of healing/putting it behind them (psychological, physical even judicial expenses) could be paid for. Part of it also goes to MSU raped students.

COMME des GARÇONS PLAY

Last summer I took this picture in New York. What caught my eye in this man's wardrobe was his shoes. I was surprised because they had hearts on them, something that I hadn't seen before. After a lil digging I found out that the heart design is from Filip Pagowski. He is a New York graphic artist and creating graphic designs for clothing is just one medium of his art. He has a variety of clients, one of which is COMME des GARÇONS. This is the brand I recognized from the sidewalk. COMME des GARÇONS is French and means "like boys". (GARÇONS in English is pronounced - gar-sowns) The label is Japanese and was founded by Rei Kawakubo. The label itself is very successful and has boutiques around the world. It is actually not new at all, it was started in 1969. Their design studio is in Aoyama, Tokyo and their products are made in Japan, France, Spain, and Turkey.

Water for Elephants

This movie is great! :] My lasting thought after watching it was.."Wow that was intense..." I didn't know what to expect because I didn't watch any previews before hand. It was engaging and had unpredictable moments. The fashion was something that really drew me in. I have loved 1920s and 30s fashion for a while now. I love movies that are period pieces in general. So the combinations of the two won me over. This movie is one of some that throw you into that time period and it feels like you are living it. That feeling comes from the costumes, scenery, props, and the acting of course. It is interesting me to think of movies I have watched and to kind of put them in consecutive order...like Pride and Predjudice, The Patriot, Amistad, Anne of Green Gables, to this movie. All these movies kind of transition from one style to the next. One small detail I noticed was Reese Witherspoon's manicure, something that may may not be noticable to most. This nail style told me that the people making this movie really understood that time and wanted to portray it well...so kudos to you! ;] The style back then was to not paint the whole nail. Painting the middle area; leaving the tip and the moon portions unpainted was appropriate.

The first picture of my cousin and her husband. She is feeding him their wedding cake. I thought this picture was so sweet and cute. I thought they looked so glamourous and very much depict the style of that time period. Even though their wedding was a few generations ago it reminded me of clothes that I have seen recently. It seems like anything inspired by vintage looks are displayed in our stores and media.

I really enjoyed viewing all of the elements put together at this photoshoot. These garments have a sophistication to them but also have a youthful, and fun appearence. I love the mixing of prints and oversized jackets.The man repelling concept is definitly a interesting inspiration to use in designing and styling. Kimberly Taylor is the designer of these garments and the looks are styled with help from Leandra Medine. Kimberly started her clothing line in 2009.

Here are some sneakers for young boys that I came across at the mall the other day. I think these shoes are cool. Lego materialized the Lego toy on a shoe in an engaging way. Each shoe of the collection has its own personality. The grey, black, and red shoe is a little more punk with the checkered formation on the side. Others are more classic by incorporating only the original Lego color story in the product. You got to love the shoe with the Lego head on the side!

Wow just from the little clip I saw while watching the Oscars I knew that this movie was going to be intense. The more I learn the back story of the film, the more I want to see it. This story is so engaging because Aron faced so much risk on his vacation and had a large obstacle to over come... being stuck in a canyon with his life on the line. To desire something such as life so badly, so bad that he wanted to amputate an arm is daring and takes so much courage as well as strength.

Much like our goals we must desire them much like Aron desired life.

Motown Sound at the White House

I watched Motown Sound at the White House tonight on PBS. It was a really fun concert to watch. It was in honor of Black History last month. I liked it because it featured classic songs with contemporary singers with appearances from Stevie Wonder and Smokey Robinson. This music influenced peoples lives and blurred the lines between black and white at the time they were created.

This was my model/cousin Lauren and I in the dressing room minutes before going on stage for the ATD fashion show last night. It was a great experience. It always feels good knowing all the hard work is done and my work can be seen on stage in front of an audience. This was my last show I will be participating in at my university since I am an alumnus now. My model did a great job and I give her a lot of credit because it takes bravery to strut her stuff in the lime light. It was fun to see all the creative minds behind the curtains and their great work. Being part of a show just confirms to me how much people are capable of when they believe in themselves and that becomes a driver to make their dreams/goals/ideas into a reality.

I found these photos of these LV animals and I thought they were cute and odd which makes the the customer engaged. It is an interesting element to have these animals as a window display. These pieces show the fun side of the brand. There is a lot of creativity involved and it just makes me think of what some one is capable of when having to start this project from scratch with all these materials to work from and where their mind can take them.

This is a sweet commercial. This is a Superbowl commercial that aired last night advertising the Chrysler 200. I haven't seen one representing the Motor City quite like this one has. Vehicles at first might not seem related to fashion but they very much are. Vehicles are a part of dress and dress is how people view each other based on what we add to the body. Other than that I like how a culture was connected to the product because it gives the car a context around it.

I thought it was time to make a beautiful gown! So here it is! :D This is the first gown I have made other than the trash gown I made a few months ago. The trash gown was one of the things that inspired me to do this project. I love the beading, the draping all over the gown, the focal point in the back with the draped roses, and the corset style tying. It was challenge but it was exciting to meet that challenge and excel at it! This wedding gown was interesting to make. Believe it or not the beading was from a old 80s top with shoulder pads! Every step of the way was an experiment to how the draping of the fabric would lay and the overall look of the gown. That creativity was very enjoyable! This gown will be presented in a fashion show next month and I am very excited about the presentation!

I'm sure most people have a list of entertainment from growing up that never really fades from their memory. I really loved this movie as a kid and I still do! After all these years I still find value in it.The story line is great and I love the message. I love the the idea that all women are princesses..its our right!! The imagination in this movie is great too and the idea of promoting it. The fashion in this film is beautiful! The movie payed attention to detail to portray that time period. I loved the vibrant colors, various colors, ribbons, and fabrics. The major theme in the movie is GREEN in almost every scene there is going to be some sort element of green either in the set itself or in the clothing. Overall this movie just makes me happy. This is a vid I found that I thought was really creative. It is a remix of vocals, sound effects and musical chords from the movie .

The Ralph Lauren brand did this by creating the '4D experience' advertising campaign. The above videos show the New York fashion show and the behind the scenes of how the production was achieved. Before heading to my cousin's housewarming party my sister and I went to a local bakery in our neighborhood. We picked up cupcakes for the guests! :] Their shop is adorable and very much my style. I just had to take a pic! They pay attention to detail. I think a lot of women would appreciate the shopping experience.

* (Also, on a side note...buying things local is another sustainable activity. It is improving the local economy and not exhausting someone else's resources but using your state's or town's resources. So next time when you want to go out, maybe instead of going to a chain owned restaurant you have been to 100 times you could try a new local place that just opened down the street!)

Trash Dress

Here is my finished product! I provided a video that captured the process of creating this piece. By creating this gown I materialized the method of sustainable design. This design is conceptual, it can be worn, and it is art. The gown is made of some pieces of bubble wrap, Siran wrap, a vegetable bag, plastic packaging, but mostly shopping bags and trash bags. The gown is constructed much like a gown made of fabric..it has seam allowances and they were melted together instead of sewn together. I researched many trash materials but these allowed me to create this gown with more ease.

My first draft of the under structure did not go as planned. All of the thin pattern pieces were shrinking because of all the heat involved in melting the seams together. After this I made the under structure very thick and stable. This made the fitted torso portion much like a corset or armor!

When making a sustainable gown or any other types of garments there are some things to consider in order to make something that is truly sustainable. The materials have to be made in a way that doesn't harm the environment. In my case I used trash which does harm the environment and by making something out of trash I am keeping the materials away from landfills. The grommets I used as closures are not sustainable because I bought them at a local store. The 2nd use for this garment is an art piece to be displayed. The construction was not sustainable because I used electricity and water to create it. At the end of the day nothing can be 100% sustainable but the goal is to have a percentage of 75% and my gown is 82% sustainable.

I love the simple layout of the jars and the various colors that are inside each one. It looks really attractive and clutter free. I also like how all the vegetables and beans are stored in old fashioned Ball jars. The jars themselves add character to the space that new containers from a local retailer could not bring. I also love the vase. I think these are great center pieces when filled with fruit in the summer, and can be changed periodically throughout the seasons. The coffee beans and the other items are beautiful together. This set of items can really be perfect for any time of the year. I love the neutral colors all together. The vase complements the wall color and the pieces in the room. My cousins did a fabulous job decorating their home! :D

Eco-Fashion: Going Green at FIT

While in New York our group had a tour of FIT's exhibit Eco-Fashion: Going Green. These are a few videos that give a glimpse of the garments that are being showcased. I learned a lot about how eco friendly clothing. It has been around a lot longer than I previously thought. In the 18th century the gowns were made of so much fabric and the fabric itself was very expensive. So the gowns were only altered when fashions changed. They were also made into totally different garments like men's jackets.

No One liked the New Gap Logo

Verses

Gap decided to change it's brand image with a new logo but to their surprise the public was not happy with it at all. After Gap received so much negative feedback they reverted back to the original logo. Coca Cola had a similar response when they changed their pop formula...no one liked it so they went back to selling the original formula and now it is called Coca Cola Classic. When a brand is so recognizable it is understandable that viewers would dislike such a huge change. Many may think, 'If it isn't broken why fix it?' Gap is also thinking about changing the store design from wooden floors and metal fixtures to something new, contemporary...look out for the store makeover!

This is an attractive look from the J Crew Bridal boutique. The skirt is actually floor length and possibly worn to a wedding, which is okay. I would prefer the skirt to be shorter and worn any day, special occasion or not...it is versatile. I like how the pearls match with the satin, how it is feminine, and the mixture of being dressed up but also dressed down with the denim included.

This designer is very innovative. These are a few garments I viewed in NY from his Artisanal line. I thought he was very creative by using alternative materials other than fabric. The Shoestring dress is white and made of 400 shoe laces woven together. On the Plastic Fur Jacket there are 29,000 tag fasteners attached to leather jacket arranged almost like herringbone fabric. It is a very creative way of using unusual materials. Using tag fasteners is a great idea because most people would throw them away without a second thought. So it made me think...what kind of materials are known to be useless but if I think outside of my understanding could be of use. It is a challenge for myself but I think it is a fun one as well! :]

Today I started draping in order to create the patterns for my trash gown! I am going to be up-cycling our everyday trash into fashion. This project is interesting because I get to really see where my imagination will take me. It seems as though the more limitations there are the more creative designs get. I guess this happens because in order to make a design work with limitations the designer has to think outside the box. I really don't want to take any shortcuts and truly make this garment completely out of trash.

I am also learning a lot about how much we are actually consuming and disposing. It makes me feel good to give this stuff a second life and keep it from the landfills for a little while longer.

These are some of the ready to wears that went down Custo Barcelona's runway for Spring/Summer 2011 during Fashion Week. I think these garments are fun and imaginative. The colors are perfect for Summer and Spring. Some pieces in the line seem to almost have a psychedelic feel to them. The sleeves with the pink triangles (second to last photo) resemble a quilt which encompasses pieces of fabric sewn together.

I love this kind of ceiling design. There is so much detail. This detail can not be found in new building interiors so it is a treat to view it when I can. If inspired by older interiors, below are ways to incorporate a similar look with tin embossed tiles in newer buildings or homes to get that authentic and vintage appeal like the picture above. I really like the tin black splash in a kitchen.

I did not know that the imagery on Hawai'i garments have meaning. After viewing the vid of Sig Zane I learned a lot about the clothing; it represents the culture and the clothing is very much part of the culture.
This sums up what Sig had said:

The imagery on the shirts and dresses of Hawai'i are a reflection of the environment and tell the stories of the people. Sig Zane's designs take the viewer or wearer into the forest and he wants them to become part of the forest. The plants have meanings and describe other things. Different plants represent fire, the volcano, new growth, and an unfolding of a story. The palette used in the garments is wide and varied because those colors are all over Hawai'i. He hand cuts all of his textile designs which means his work is not made by using computers. Sig enjoys using his knowledge of the ocean, forest, and the hula in his work. He hopes that the wearer can wear the story, the tradition and tell story to others so that the story lives on. He lives and works on the island of Hilo.

I was able to see Degas' work at the MET. I thought it was funny because I photographed The Little Fourteen-Year Old Dancer in NY and after my trip I saw the same statue in the movie, Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian. There are also differences in the way the statues look.

The initial photograph is of my great grandfather in 1916. Many may think that his outfit is ancient and not part of our current dress. Although, it seems like his look is coming back either very similarly throughout an outfit or just in certain aspects of it. ...He looks rather dapper with his hair style, poke a dot tie, and fancy pocket square. These current styles can be seen in brands like Michael Bastian and All Saints.

This company pays attention to the biggest to the smallest details which makes their product that much more. It is interesting to learn about all the different components that go into the end result. It is great that Levi's took on this huge challenge because so many people have a hard time finding the perfect fitting jean. Thx Reva for the vid! :D

Play Me I'm Yours!

The Sing for Hope organization displayed a Street Piano installation where there were 60 pianos placed all around New York's five boroughs in parks and public spaces. All of the instruments invited any passerby to sit down and play something. This project was an example of public and contemporary art. Contemporary art allows the viewer not only to be a spectator but also to be part of the art. This allows the community to learn and to possibly have fun. It is interesting because it connects the viewer to something instead of just having the viewer looking at something on a wall. Even though I can't play the piano very well it was nice to listen to others play while eating lunch and traveling to different locations of the city and seeing the art at work!

The High Line

The High Line Park. This was one destination in NY that I wanted to go to before actually arriving in the city. I was finally able to go just before my trip was over which was exciting. The park was made on an abandoned railroad. The railroad itself was created to transport goods and lifted from the ground for pedestrian and driver safety in 1934 and was no longer in use after 1980. In 1999 the idea of reviving the space came to mind to a few New Yorkers, by 2003 the idea became more real and in 2009 it opened. I really enjoyed hearing about the park and going. The park is full of innovation, art and is something I have never seen before.

I loved the views from the park

Over one hundred different species of plants are in the park and many are native to New York.

The seating in the park seem to leap from the foundations

The design of the park still incorporates the railroad in the walk way.

I like the view of the water from there and seeing the old dock that used to stand there.

A sitting area where people can view the street from the huge windows.

I love these different colored windows

While some seats are stationary others are movable and move along the train tracks with their own set of wheels. I thought that was a really cool idea as well and another great way to incorporate the train remnants.

I like that this place was made from something old and was renewed so that the people in New York could enjoy it again. I enjoyed seeing the old design joined with a contemporary design. I wasn't able to see the whole park but what I did see was awesome.

Vibrant colors, textures, and the culture within.These pictures are from my sisters who went to Mexico. Images like these can be useful for inspiration for my future projects. I like using bright colors in my work and I am drawn to colors that are vibrant. Maybe I am drawn to color because it is part of my culture and makes me happy :]

This company specializes in producing custom academic gear for students. The garments show off school pride but with a creative twist. I love the color combinations and how the brand combines different styles such as Prep, Vintage, and Urban. There are also stitching details, embroidery and screen printing incorporated in the garments. Representing a school has gone further than just wearing a just a regular t shirt and hoodie.

The American High Style exhibit at the Brooklyn Museum. I was so happy to see Charles James' for leaf clover gown, and the House of Worth after learning about the subjects in class. To see famous designer pieces was really exciting and awesome. Some of the designers were Dior, Chanel, YSL, Poiret, and Lanvin. Some of the pieces are replicas from movies, like the green hat from Gone With the Wind.

I liked the industrial feel of this store. There were all sorts of metal machinery and parts throughout. Some pieces I liked are the shoes above. They look antique which seems like a style that is well on its way to coming back.
