Reading Materials

As I open the door the Barnes &  Noble or Borders I often look forward to the wide variety of books, stationary, and knick knacks. Above all I look most forward to picking up a fashion magazine. I may read it I may not. The main purpose to me is to be taken away and to be hopefully mesmerized by each glossy or matte page I flip through. I love how the fashion photography tells a story, and sells the merchandise in such a beautiful way. I appreciate the art. I gaze at the construction of garments, try to figure out how its made ..almost like putting together a puzzle. I hunt for something unusual to catch my eye, anything to feed my creativity. After I find my buried treasure and take the material home I may eventually rip several pages out and add it to my latest project. These texts become an addition to my collection.

The anticipation I hold on to as I cross the street, walk up the curb, onto the sidewalk ..into the store and the experience I have while I am there may only become a distant memory in twenty years or so. As these new "smart" devices or e-readers "dominate" the electronics market ...newspapers and magazines get thinner and thinner.
...It seems like such a great joy for my grandfather to open the morning's paper and read his favorite section with his cup of coffee... And what a joy it is to discover antique fashion magazines and to realize this was their favorite thing to look at back then and those clothes were "in" and trend setting.

..Well enough for nostalgia and that experience..right? ..who needs that?!

America..We need the latest gadget!

Sherlock

A classic tale was brought to the big screen. It was a good film and wasn't what I expected at all. Sherlock Holmes and his assistant John Watson were given a new life because the actors portrayed them as more than just "dorky" detectives trying to solve a problem. The movie was full of action scenes and the characters were clever, witty and each had superlative fighting techniques. The characters themselves were not the only things depicted differently. Overall I could imagine seeing the characters wear those

sorts of garments in the original short stories. Although Holmes and Watson had a more laid back, edgy look. I really like the sunglasses, fur and corduroy jacket ...also the hats Holmes wore. The villain had a leather jacket that I liked too. Adler wore a gorgeous jacket that cut around the bustle that reached all the way to the ground. (she also wore pants which was unheard of back then.)

The remake of the wardrobe was excellent.

Dress

In class we are learning that dress is just not what you wear but basically everything you do to change your body.

Dress is:
putting on perfume
getting tattoos
using toothpaste which alters the smell of your mouth
teeth whitening
combing your hair
wearing lipstick or any other kind of make up
piercings
the way your steps sound
posture
gestures
long fingernails
belching
snapping fingers
cracking knuckles
removing wrinkles
plastic surgery
changing your bodies size by exercising, weight lifting, dieting or anorexia.

...The list goes on. It is interesting how vast dress actually is and is pretty cool to think about because what is considered dress may be things you
never thought about.

Alice

I randomly walked into Hot Topic today after watching the movie Avator (which was a really cool movie by the way..and reached 1 billion in profit according to today's news in Huffington Post) and when I mean random I mean I don't even remember the last time I stepped foot in one. Anyways what drew me in was the stick on Alice and Wonderland teapots and teacups on the window and the Hello Kitty merchandise. :] I wouldn't imagine this store carrying this kind of merchandise six years ago but the store is changing. After seeing the big Alice in Wonderland posters in the theatre lobby and being really excited to see it.. it's no wonder that I wanted to check out what kind of Alice things they had in stock. Here are the shirts that I thought were cute and creatively made! This movie kinda looks creepy and dark but I want to see the creativity at work and see Tim Burton's take on the classic.
